The Founder's Story

George Abraham — The Engineer Who Came Home for Flavour

George Abraham is an electronics engineer from VIT Vellore who spent years living and working across big Indian cities and Europe — including a stint in Ireland. He ate well. He ate at good restaurants. He bought premium brands off supermarket shelves in Dublin and Delhi alike.

None of it tasted like home.

Home is Pathanamthitta — three hours inland from Cochin, deep in Kerala's spice country, where black pepper vines climb jackfruit trees and cardamom dries on family courtyards. George grew up surrounded by ingredients that didn't need a label to prove they were real.

The gap between what he'd grown up eating and what the world was selling as "premium spices" wasn't subtle. It was obvious — in the aroma that wasn't there, in the colour that was a shade too uniform, in the flavour that faded before it landed. Somewhere between farm and shelf, the soul of the ingredient had been engineered out — diluted, adulterated, or processed into compliance.

So George made a choice most engineers wouldn't: he came back. Not just to Kerala, but to the land itself — starting with black pepper grown across the same Kerala hills he'd known since childhood: Wayanad, Munnar, Pala. Working directly with a small cluster of farmers — many of them family or neighbours — on what the soil and the season would give. The conviction was simple: everyone deserves Indian spices in their intended natural state, with full nutritional benefit and zero compromise. Not as a luxury. As a right.

That conviction became Farmgrade.

How We Work

Small Clusters. Deep Roots.

Farmgrade doesn't work with commodity supply chains. We build small, concentrated clusters of farmers across India — choosing each region for what it grows best. The Kerala hills for black pepper, with many of the farmers neighbours or family. The Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya for Lakadong turmeric. The high-altitude plantations of Idukki for vanilla. Each cluster works with us directly on sustainable cultivation practices. No synthetic pesticides. No chemical insecticides. No artificial growth accelerants. The farming is slow, deliberate, and guided by what the soil and season will give.

The clusters stay small by design. Fewer farmers means we know every plot, every harvest, every batch. Accountability isn't a policy. It's a phone call.

Sorted and Ground In-House

This is where most brands lose the plot. Commercial grinding at scale generates heat — which destroys volatile oils, the very compounds that carry flavour, aroma, and nutritional value. Large operations also create opportunities for dilution: mixing grades, adding starch or flour, blending in spent material.

Farmgrade sorts and grinds everything in-house. Every batch is processed at controlled temperatures to preserve essential oils. Nothing is added. Nothing is blended away. What you receive is the ingredient — whole, intact, and honest.

Quantities are limited. Every gram is from the heart.

The Collection

Farmgrade's range covers everyday spices, premium single-origin ingredients, and a small set of carefully built masala blends. Every product is sourced from the region in India that grows that ingredient best — Kerala for pepper, Meghalaya for turmeric, Rajasthan for coriander, Karnataka for chilli, Idukki for vanilla. Each item is processed in small batches and packed without filler, salt bulking, artificial colour, or anti-caking agents.

Of everything in the range, one product captures the entire Farmgrade approach in a single ingredient.

Vanilla Beans — AAA Grade, Hand-Selected

Origin: Idukki, Kerala

Farmgrade's vanilla programme represents the pinnacle of our sourcing philosophy. Every bean is AAA grade — hand-selected individually for moisture content, oil concentration, size, and appearance. These aren't commodity vanilla beans bought off a broker's manifest. They're chosen one at a time.

The difference is immediate. Split a Farmgrade vanilla bean and the cavity is dense, glossy, and resinous. The aroma is complex — deep bourbon sweetness layered with floral, woody, and subtly smoky notes. The seed paste is concentrated and intensely flavoured, which means you use less and get more.

For chocolatiers, pâtissiers, and culinary professionals who build flavour from the ingredient up, provenance isn't a marketing story — it's a technical input. You need to know where your vanilla was grown, how it was cured, and whether what you're tasting is the bean or an additive. With Farmgrade, the answer is always the bean.

We work with a limited number of partner farms, and every lot is traceable from vine to delivery. Total annual volume is capped by what meets our selection threshold — not by what the market demands. When it's gone, it's gone.

Coming Soon

Two more additions to the Farmgrade collection — each held to the same standard as everything above:

Cardamom — Bold green cardamom from the Kerala hill country, hand-sorted at peak maturity for the eucalyptol-rich oil that defines a real Idukki cardamom.

Munnar Tea — High-grown tea from the Munnar plateau, where altitude, mist, and slow leaf development produce one of South India's most distinctive tea profiles.

Who Farmgrade Is For

Farmgrade exists for people who care about what goes into their food more than what's printed on the label.

Home cooks who've tasted the difference and can't go back. Chefs who build dishes from the ingredient up. Chocolatiers and bakers who know that vanilla isn't vanilla isn't vanilla. Food creators who understand that "organic" on a sticker means nothing if the grinding process destroyed half the compound profile before it reached the jar.

If you value origin, traceability, and the unadulterated integrity of an ingredient — you're who we built this for.

Limited by nature. Uncompromised by choice.
